What Tests Are Required Before Starting IVF Treatment?

You may be feeling anxious, or even unsure about the step you are taking.

It’s totally normal to feel that way.

But you are taking a hopeful step toward parenthood with IVF.

In IVF treatment, both men and women will need to undergo some set of tests before starting the procedure.

These tests help doctors accurately diagnose the problem and create a personalized treatment plan to help you conceive.

In this article, we have outlined all pre-IVF diagnostic tests. We’ll explain what tests you and your partner will undergo before IVF treatment.

Why is IVF pre-treatment testing important?

Pre-IVF diagnostic tests provide valuable information about the reproductive health of both partners and help determine if IVF is a suitable option. This approach also minimizes the risks associated with IVF. It also increases the chances of a successful treatment.

Key Tests Required Before Starting IVF Treatment

There are several required tests that need to be done before IVF.

Below are the pre-IVF diagnostic tests both partners need to undergo. This includes tests before IVF specifically for women and men.

IVF test for Both Partners

Here are some common screening tests that may be recommended:

  1. Check for Infectious Diseases

To lower the risk of complications from infectious diseases, you and your partner should have some blood tests. These tests screen for diseases like HIV, hepatitis B, C, syphilis, and varicella.

These infections can harm the growing fetus and lead to issues during pregnancy.

If either of you tests positive, additional testing, treatments, and counseling may be necessary before starting the IVF treatment cycle.

  1. Pre Op Profile

A pre-operative profile is a set of tests done before an IVF procedure to assess a patient’s health and identify potential risks.

It includes blood count, blood sugar tests, kidney function tests, infectious disease screenings (HIV, hepatitis B, C, syphilis, varicella), and hormone level evaluations for reproductive health.

  1. Check for Genetic Diseases

You may need to test for sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, or other genetic disorders, especially if you have a family history of these conditions or if you belong to a population where a specific disease, like sickle cell anemia, is more common.

IVF Test for Women

  1. Ovarian Reserve Testing

The test involves blood tests to measure hormone levels and assess how many eggs a woman has in her ovarian reserve.

  • Here are some Hormonal Tests for IVF:
  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
Purpose: Measures the hormone that helps stimulate egg production.
  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Purpose: Measures the hormone that triggers ovulation.
  • Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH)
Purpose: Measures ovarian reserve, indicating the number of eggs remaining.
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
Purpose: Checks thyroid function, which can affect fertility

Other tests that may be performed alongside a TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test include:

  • T3 and T4: If TSH levels are abnormal, doctors may check the levels of these thyroid hormones.
  • Thyroid Antibodies: If an autoimmune disorder is suspected, doctors may measure thyroid antibody levels.
  • Calcitonin: If a specific type of thyroid cancer is suspected, the calcitonin level in the blood may be assessed.
  • Thyroid Scan: This imaging test uses a CT scan to assess the size and position of the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid Uptake Test: This test measures how effectively the thyroid gland functions

A higher level of FSH in the blood usually indicates a lower ovarian reserve, which may decrease the chances of conceiving.

  1. Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a type of surgery used for couples facing unexplained infertility or those who have had unsuccessful IVF cycles.

This procedure allows doctors to look inside the reproductive system and find the causes of infertility in the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.

Sometimes, the surgeon may even fix any issues they find. This diagnostic procedure can improve IVF success rates.

  1. laparoscopy and hysteroscopy

Laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are minimally invasive procedures used to diagnose and treat gynecological issues affecting fertility. Before IVF, they can enhance conception chances by addressing conditions like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, polyps, blocked fallopian tubes, and scar tissue.

Both procedures are highly beneficial in improving the chances of conception.

IVF Test for Men

  1. Semen Analysis

This test is for male partners to check the quantity and quality of their sperm.

Semen evaluation helps determine the shape, motility, and concentration of the sperm, identifying any issues that could affect fertilization.

If sperm count is absent, TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) or microTESA (Microdissection Testicular Sperm Extraction) is advised.
